Is Online Manual Handling Training Valid in Ireland?

The short answer: online theory training is widely accepted, and online courses that also assess your technique are accepted in more places than they were a few years ago. The longer answer depends on the job and on who is asking for the certificate.

What the law says about the format

The 2007 Regulations require employers to provide information and training on correct handling, including how to do the work safely. They do not prescribe a classroom, a projector or a specific delivery method. What matters is that the training is relevant to the person's work and that the employer can show the person is competent to do it.

Where online does the job well

• Theory, legislation and anatomy, which are the same in a room or on a screen
• Refresher training for workers who have been assessed before
• Teams spread across sites, shifts or countries
• Roles with occasional low-risk handling rather than constant heavy lifting
• Multilingual workforces, where each person can learn in their own language

Where a practical element is needed

If handling is central to the role — care work, construction, meat processing, logistics — an employer needs evidence of technique, not just a test score. That is where a recorded practical assessment comes in: the learner films themselves performing a lift from a side-on angle, and the recording is assessed against the same criteria an instructor would use in person, including back alignment, knee bend and how close the load stays to the body.

It has a practical advantage over a one-day classroom session too. The recording is kept, so there is a documented, reviewable piece of evidence rather than a tick on an attendance list.

Questions worth asking before you buy

• Does the course include an assessment of technique or only a quiz?
• Is the certificate verifiable by a third party, for example by scanning a code?
• Does the content reference Irish law and HSA guidance rather than generic material?
• How long is the certificate valid and is there a reminder before it expires?
• Can the employer see and download certificates for their whole team?
• Is the assessment reviewed by a qualified person where needed?

A note on 'accredited'

'Accredited' is used loosely in training marketing. Ask what body, what level and what the certificate actually states. A clear, verifiable certificate that names the course, the date, the assessment and the expiry is far more useful at a site induction than a vague badge.
