Manual handling course: what you learn, how you're assessed, what you get

Everything about our online manual handling course in one place — the modules, how long each part takes, how the theory test and practical lift assessment are marked, and what the certificate shows an employer.

  • Video-led modules in seven languages
  • About 45 minutes from start to certificate
  • Theory test plus optional instructor-reviewed practical assessment
  • QR-verifiable certificate valid for three years

Course modules

The course is delivered as short narrated video slides. You watch each slide in turn, and the module is only marked complete once every video in it has been watched, so nothing can be skipped.

  • Module 1 — Irish law: the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the General Application Regulations 2007, and the duties they place on you and your employer
  • Module 2 — Anatomy of the spine and how handling injuries actually happen
  • Module 3 — TILE risk assessment: Task, Individual, Load, Environment
  • Module 4 — Safe lifting and lowering technique, step by step
  • Module 5 — Pushing, pulling, carrying and team handling
  • Module 6 — Mechanical aids, awkward loads and reporting concerns

Duration and pace

Most people complete the whole course in around 45 minutes. There is no time limit and no scheduled session to attend. Your progress is saved, and the access link emailed to you at enrolment brings you back to exactly where you stopped — useful if you are fitting the course around shifts.

How you are assessed

The theory test presents one multiple-choice question at a time. When you finish you see a detailed breakdown: which answers were right, which were wrong, the correct answer for each, and a link back to the slide that covers it. If you do not pass, you can review and retake the test at no extra cost.

On the options that include the practical assessment, you record a short video of yourself lifting a light load — straight from the page on your phone, or by uploading a clip you already have. Our certified instructor reviews the recording and scores three elements: back alignment, knee bend and how close the load is kept to your body. You need at least 65% on each element and 70% overall to pass. If you do not pass, you are asked to record again, free of charge.

Course options and pricing

One payment, no subscription. Prices are in euro and include everything needed to reach the certificate.

  • Theory only — €30. Suited to office, retail and other low-risk roles where an employer asks for handling awareness at induction or refresher time.
  • Theory plus practical assessment — €40. The option to choose for construction, healthcare, warehousing, logistics and food production, where evidence of practical competence is expected.
  • Already took theory only? The practical assessment can be added afterwards for €10, keeping your existing theory result.

Your certificate

Your certificate is issued as a downloadable A4 PDF in English, valid for three years from the date of issue. It shows your name, the course and option taken, your assessment result, the issue and expiry dates, and a unique certificate number.

Each certificate also carries a QR code. Scanning it opens a public verification page on this site, so a site supervisor, main contractor or HR team can confirm it is genuine in seconds without contacting us or logging in anywhere. We email you a reminder before the three years are up.

Who the course is for

Individual workers arranging their own certification, and employers certifying a team. Corporate accounts can buy course places in bulk, invite employees by email, track who has completed what, and download invoices — useful ahead of an audit or a site induction deadline.
