When Does a Manual Handling Certificate Expire — and What Happens Next?

Almost every manual handling certificate issued in Ireland carries a three-year validity. It is worth understanding where that comes from, because it is convention supported by guidance rather than a date written into a statute.

Why three years

Employers must keep training current and appropriate to the work. Three years became the practical standard because technique drifts, jobs change, and site inductions need a simple rule they can check. Main contractors and agencies almost universally apply it, so an older certificate will often be refused even if the content is still sound.

Renew earlier when something changes

• New equipment, new layout or a new type of load
• A return to work after a back or shoulder injury
• An accident or near miss involving handling
• A move into a higher-risk role, for example from stores into care work
• Supervisor observation that technique has slipped

What renewal involves

Renewal is not a formality, but it should not be a repeat of day one either. A good refresher revisits the risk assessment framework, updates anything that has changed in guidance, and reassesses technique. Where the original course included a recorded practical assessment, the renewal is usually quicker because the learner already knows the format.

Do not rely on memory for the date

The most common compliance gap we see is not bad training — it is a certificate that quietly expired while everyone assumed it was fine. Keep a register with expiry dates, and choose a provider that emails a reminder before the certificate lapses so you renew on your own schedule rather than the morning of a site induction.
